ThursdayThumbsUp: Venice
I’ve just returned from a week at the Venice film Festival. The festival itself is held on Lido and I usually book a hotel close by. However this year I left it too late and so I took a punt on the surprise hotel on last minute.com. My surprise turned out to be a lovely one. Although I didn’t get a hotel on Lido I found myself less than a minutes walk from St. Mark’s Square.
The Hotel Cavalletto & Doge Orseolois is one of the oldest 4-star hotels in Venice. In It’s in a fantastic location, in the heart of the old town centre, has many restaurants nearby and is also minutes from shops and churches doubling as art galleries. Then of course there is the Square, where you will find the domes of Saint Mark’s Basilica, the imposing Ducal Palace and the tall bell tower. In the evening there is music in the square and in the morning the water buses taking me to Lido were less than 10 minutes walk away.
The staff were friendly and helpful, especially when I was running late for the airport on my journey home.
The rooms are clean and include a small fridge (very handy considering it was sweltering), the bathrooms well stocked with toiletries and spare toilet paper.
Highly recommended.
