LAMBETH COUNTY COURT | SUSTENANCE
We love being at Lambeth County Court over lunch: the judges normally give you a full hour and there are some amazing cafes nearby. Start by turning right out of the County Court and left onto Kennington Road where you will find:
Sally White Food Lover, 353 Kennington Road
New café just opened at the end of the row of shops on the corner. It’s a bright and airy place, serving the most delicious homemade treats and coffee. The lunch menu changes daily but you can expect quiches, frittatas, elaborate salads, and delicious sausage rolls. Also don’t forget to treat yourself to one of the amazing cupcakes or pastries. Sally White is a baking goddess!
Madeira Star Café, 337-339 Kennington Road
Much bigger portions and better value than some of its neighbour cafes, this place does simple sandwiches, pastas, salads and jacket potatoes, which are easy to take away. Not groundbreaking, but hits the spot.
Vergies Café
This place seems to be a popular hangout for lunching lawyers, which we find surprising because we’ve always found the food disappointing and overpriced. Either we’re missing something or we’re all just too lazy/ignorant to eat a few doors down. So why is it in our list of recommended places you ask? Well, we have to admit their (Ily) coffee is the best around.
Thai Ming, 1-5 Windmill Row
Just off Kennington Road (tucked round the corner from Pizza Express), this Thai restaurant has a lunchtime deal of 2 courses for £5.95. It’s not the best Thai food in London by any means or the best ambience –the restaurant décor is slightly on the sterile side – but it is excellent value for money and something different when you don’t feel like a sarnie. Tom Yum soup and Beef stir fry recommended.
Black Prince Pub, 6 Black Prince Road
If you’ve got a long break and can sit down for a meal or just need a pint after a long day at court, head here, just off Kennington Road. Great atmosphere thanks to the candle-lit interior and excellent food. Nice garden in the summer.
LAMBETH COUNTY COURT | THINGS TO DO
Kennington Bookshop, 306 Kennington Road
This bookshop is a treat and worth popping into to or from court. It’s the ideal place to find a last minute gift.
Imperial War Museum
Got a few hours free to roam? Why not head to the IWM? Currently in the middle of renovations, it reopens on 19 July 2014 and promises the largest exhibition of British WW1 art for almost 100 years, as well as the revival of the old stalwarts such as the The Secret War exhibition, which reveals (almost) all about espionage and covert operations during the war.
