Stone Court House Hotel: Maidstone
Who would have thought I’d find a gem of a hotel in….Maidstone?
No, I wasn’t on holiday in the town (I’m sure it has much to offer but it’s not on my tourist must do list).
Increasingly, during a lengthy case outside London, I break up the relentless daily commute with a night or two in a local hotel. (I thoroughly recommend it as a way to feel rested and alert for the remainder of the case).
I found the Stone Courthouse Hotel via Booking.com. It had 5 star reviews. That it was minutes from the court sold it to me even more.
Trying to locate didn’t get off to a promising start. Google Maps led me to the shabbier end of a long street (Lower Stone Street) where a 5 star hotel seemed an unlikely proposition.
The hotel is not visibly advertised. You simply look for the number on the door and enter via a code you’ve been sent on your phone. There is no reception desk but the owners do live on the property and can be contacted by telephone.
Inside is rather glorious. It’s like stepping back in time or taking a trip to Downton Abbey.
Stone Courthouse is a grade 2 star listed Georgian townhouse, with parts dating back to mediaeval times. It’s been a luxury, boutique hotel since 2002.
The communal areas are beautifully and opulently furnished. There’s even a knight in shining armour to keep an eye on things!

The bedrooms are wonderfully elegant, with an antique charm but with all modern amenities. The rooms are inspired by eminent judges from the Victorian era and each has its own character. You either get a grand four poster bed or a large one. Both are extremely comfortable. The hotel is used as a wedding venue and so some of the rooms and suites have a very romantic feel to them.

An iron and board are available in each room. Small chocolates nestling in the towels, on arrival, are a nice touch . The bathrooms are spotless and individual toiletries are available. Although I haven’t had time to try the breakfast, it is available to order.

And yes, both the Magistrates and Combined Courts are a 5-10 walk away, respectively.
I enjoyed my first stay so much, I’ve been back a couple of times during lengthy cases. During the stay before Christmas, there was something extra special about walking in off the street to the sound of Christmas music being played in the reception area.
I really can’t fault this unique hotel.
Cost wise – I’ve spent between £77-88 per night.
